Reading/Watching The Olympics
I love a good theme.
Hello! I’m popping into your inbox randomly to talk about books and other content. This seems to be the only response when the world is on fire, no?1
I have unintentionally taken an extended break from this newsletter, so I should have a lot of books to recommend. Unfortunately, I’ve been writing and editing a book, so I haven’t been reading very much.
Nevertheless, I am here to suggest a few things for those of us in Olympics mode! And in true me fashion, most of them have caveats!!
The Favorites by Layne Fargo
I’ve already recommended this to you, and now is the *PERFECT* time to read it! Figure skating drama! Pairs drama! Who will win the gold medal? And how?? Sound like anything from the past few days in Olympics land? I read the audiobook and loved it.
Carrie Soto Is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid
This isn’t technically the Olympics, but it is about sports. Tennis, to be exact. The best to ever do it comes out of retirement for one final season, and drama ensues. Listen, I don’t like tennis. I don’t watch it. I don’t understand it. I refuse to play it. I loved this book! Trust me.
Racing Hearts by Ann Adams2
This book’s caveat: I haven’t read it yet. But it is about getting to the Olympics! From the book description: “When a competitive rower’s losing streak threatens her Olympic dreams, she must train for the summer with a hometown coach to win it all back in this irresistible opposites-attract romance.” An Olympics romance! Perfect timing.
Bonus content:
Glitter & Gold on Netflix
My biggest gripe about this show is that it should have been out earlier. I’ve only been able to watch about half of it because I was out of town and did not have time to binge it before the Olympics started. BUT! If you’re at all caught up with the ice dancing drama (why is it always the French judge?) and you want to know more, this is for you. It’s a documentary specifically about Chock/Bates, Gilles/Poirier, and Fournier Beaudry/Cizeron. It’s three hour-long episodes. I’ll finish it this weekend.
The Traitors on Peacock
This is a bit of a stretch, but Tara Lipinsky and Johnny Weir are both on the newest season that is currently airing. It’s a perfect thing to watch when the Olympics are over if you’d like to spend a little extra time with those two. In case you’re not watching because you’re not a reality tv aficionado: you don’t need any context for the players. It’s also more fun than you think it’s going to be!
The Cutting Edge
This movie is the perfect watch with the Winter Olympics, and that means it comes around every four years. Do not let this moment pass you by. It’s $3.99 to rent on Prime, and if you have promotional credits it’s less than that.
I’m sure I have a whole lot to say about book 2, so it can have its own newsletter. More soon!
Thank you for reading! My debut novel CASKET CASE is available wherever you get your books. If you’ve already read it and liked it, please leave a 5-star review on Goodreads or Amazon and share it on the social media of your choice. I appreciate your continued support, which allows me to keep writing books!
This is sarcasm. I have called my reps and donated to trustworthy orgs, and I encourage everyone else to do the same when you can.
We share a publisher, but I’m certainly not being paid to promote it. But let’s talk if you’re interested, Dell!!
